At this evening’s Design the Night event celebrating the RISD Museum’s reopened sixth-floor galleries, visitors with Smartphones will have access to Channel, a new audio program featuring the voices of artists, designers, curators and historians. Multimedia artist Maralie Armstrong MFA 09 DM (pictured above, in her Providence studio) – whose work examines the evolution of ritual and emotional expression through technology – will discuss her contribution to Channel at 7:30pm.

A late 18th- / early 19th-century Nō theater costume featuring a silk and gold-leaf gilt-paper twill weave
Armstrong created a musical score inspired by the museum’s collection of Nō robes, traditional garments worn by Japanese performers since the 14th century. As she explained to the museum’s Hollis Mickey, the ethereal sonic landscape she created is not intended to reproduce the sound of Nō theater, but to provide museum visitors with a unique experience of the garments on view, “invoking tensions between past and present, objects and performance, movement and stillness.”

I’m finalizing a score for RISD Museum's Nō Theater robe collection. Visitors can listen to it on headphones while browsing the world renowned collection starting next week.

Documentation of QUARTETS (2014) a sound installation designed by Stephan Moore, exhibited at OpenSignal Festival May 16 & 17, 2014. This clip features a quartet with my composition as VALISE (begins at 9:57 in video).

In this installation, four recordings by four different contributing artists play simultaneously, each recording through its own speaker. The four sound files are chosen at random from all contributed files, forming impromptu quartets. Each quartet lasts for 7 minutes, with a 30-second pause before the next one begins.

There are 86 artists featured in this installation, allowing for a total of 2,123,555 possible quartets. Listening to all possible combinations would require 30 years and nearly 4 months.
